Shinjiro couldn’t help but cock an eyebrow at her admitting to not being alright. He became even more concerned when she asked him not to freak out at what she was about to tell him. Had something happened recently that she didn’t know how to deal with? Giving her a slow nod, he locked eyes with her.

“Yea, I promise. So go ahead and tell me what’s wrong.”

“Alright….” She took in a deep breath and slowly let it out, trying to calm her racing heart. “Recently….very, recently, I should say…I…” She let out a frustrated grown, closing her eyes. “Look, I don’t know how and I don’t know why, but…I think…I think I’m in love with you,” she finally managed to say. Her face was a bright shade of red and she couldn’t meet his gaze. “I-it happened really suddenly and just came out of the blue…”

He had started walking towards the center of the shrine, when he noticed Yukiko had trailed behind, staring at the tori gates as she had when they firs entered. Turning around he walked up to her and gave her shoulder a gentle shake.

“Amagi, you sure you’re alright? Maybe we should just head over to the dorm?”

There was clearly something wrong here, but for the life of himself, Shinjiro just couldn’t put his finger on what it was.

At his question she sighed; she knew that this would be the best time to address the issue. She had to tell him, otherwise it would just continue to drive her crazy. “Actually, no. I’m not alright.” She looked up at him. “Look, I’m going to tell you something but you have to promise not to freak out because I’m not even sure how to deal with it myself. Will you promise?”

“After all, you do have someone who you are already close to yes? Think of this burden as a trial of sorts, it will likely just strengthen your love for your special someone beyond what it is now.”

He enjoyed the torment her could bring by simply stringing together a handful of words, but in the end, in wished for friends, companions, that he could trust. There was no better way of gaining such friends than by being there in a time of need.

“Yeah…I hope you’re right.” She wondered how he would take it when she finally worked up the nerve to tell him; would he react harshly? What if he thought it best they didn’t see each other again? She wanted to be friends with him still, but what if this thing that she had no control over ruined that? It was hard to think about, and it worried her.

The chill shocked her as she walked outside - it seemed way colder than usual this year. Seeing Yukiko shiver, she took her hand and grasped it tightly. It wasn’t much, but she figured it might make her at least a little warmer…of course, she would have done the same thing whether it was cold out or not. With a smile, she began walking in the direction of the Samegawa River.

As Chie grasped her hand Yukiko felt her face heat up slightly; she hated how easily she blushed, and how clearly it showed due to her pale skin. She smiled at the girl and walked beside her, grasping her hand just as tightly.

He rested a gentle hand on her shoulder and offered a small smile.

“I am no expert, Amagi-san, but I understand the emotion of love works in mysterious ways. Who’s to say this is not one of them? You feel for my other, correct? Then tell him; it’s unlikely that he’ll reciprocate your feelings, but at the very least you’ll have the weight of holding in such feelings off your chest.”

She let out a quiet sigh; she knew he was right. The longer she kept it bottled inside of her the more it would torture her. So after a moment she gave a small nod and rested her hand over the one he had on her shoulder. “You’re right….even if it’ll hurt to have him reject me, which I know he will, it’s better than letting this drive me crazy.”

“I’m not that religious honestly, but I think this is a shrine for the goddess Inari. Don’t know much other than that.”

He scratches the back of his head sheepishly and gives her a small smile.

“Wanna see the rest? Think you zoned out to much to notice it all.”

She nodded a bit, smiling. “Yeah, I’d like that.” She looked back at the tori gates, still feeling drawn to them but forcing herself to walk away. It was strange that she was having such strange feelings lately. The ones for Shinjiro and now these ones at the shrine….was something wrong with her?

He didn’t say anything as he was seemingly ignored and trailed behind the young woman, figuring she might want some space. Eventually he made it up to the pathway that split between the three sections of the shrine and instantly moved towards the tori gates at the same leisurely pace as before.

Approaching Yukiko from behind he waited at the last tori gate silently as she prayed. Only once he was sure she’d finished did he step beside her, tapping her lightly on the shoulder.

“You ok, Amagi? You zoned out back there.”

She jumped slightly as he tapped her shoulder; she hadn’t realized how out of it she had been. “O-oh, yeah. I’m fine. I just….” She looked up at the tori gates that loomed over them. “I just felt really drawn to this part of the shrine…I don’t know why. Does this part have a special meaning or anything?”
